ABOUT THIS TOOL

Free Data Storage Converter — Bytes, KB, MB, GB, KiB & GiB

Convert digital storage values with separate decimal SI and binary IEC modes so KB/MB/GB are not confused with KiB/MiB/GiB.

Decimal SI vs. binary IEC storage

Decimal storage uses powers of 1000: one kilobyte is 1,000 bytes, one megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes and one gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes.

Binary IEC units use powers of 1024: one kibibyte is 1,024 bytes, one mebibyte is 1,048,576 bytes and one gibibyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes.

1 GB1,000,000,000 bytes
1 GiB1,073,741,824 bytes
1 MB1,000,000 bytes
1 MiB1,048,576 bytes

Why the same drive can appear to have two sizes

Storage vendors often publish capacities with decimal units, while some operating-system interfaces have historically displayed binary quantities using decimal-looking labels.

Separating SI and IEC modes makes the unit definition explicit instead of pretending that GB and GiB are interchangeable.

HOW IT WORKS

How to use Data Storage Converter

01

Choose decimal or binary units

Use SI for KB/MB/GB or IEC for KiB/MiB/GiB so the unit definition is explicit.

02

Enter the storage value

Select the source and target units and type the size you want to convert.

03

Compare every unit

Read the selected conversion and the full same-system unit matrix.

FAQ

Common questions

Is 1 GB the same as 1 GiB?

No. 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes, while 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes.

How many bytes are in 1 MB?

In decimal SI notation, 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes.

How many bytes are in 1 MiB?

1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes.

Which mode should I use?

Use decimal SI when the source uses KB, MB, GB or TB. Use binary IEC when the source explicitly uses KiB, MiB, GiB or TiB.
